The Philadelphia Children's Foundation Regatta:
Where Will the Proceeds Go? |
 |
The Philadelphia Children's Foundation is building a citywide network of adults, organizations, and businesses, in order to provide all the young people in Philadelphia and the entire Delaware Valley, with the support and resources they need to succeed in life.
PCF's Career Exploration Initiative:
Some schools in Philadelphia have Reading Proficiency levels as low as 6.2%, and Math Proficiency Levels as low as 5.5%. There are some schools in Philadelphia, where 73% of the graduating seniors do not know what they are going to do after leaving high school. In any given year 8,000 students officially drop out of Philadelphia schools, and an additional 5,000 spend so little time in school that they are considered near drop outs.
Philadelphia is in the midst of an educational crisis. Our research has definitively shown that a major reason for our students’ underachievement is their lack of knowledge of the career possibilities available to them. We are currently developing various outreach programs that will stimulate children’s interests in careers, provide them with all available knowledge about those careers, and motivate them to perform to the best of their ability in and out of school.
Proceeds Will Benefit These Programs:
Philadelphia's Special Needs Students:
According to a national survey of families with mentally disabled children, only 7% of the participants said that their school authorities are adequately trained in special education, and 68% said that their children had to fail a grade before their school implemented any special needs service. Pennsylvania’s special needs students have a combined reading and math proficiency rate of 30.7%, and it is estimated that the national drop out rate for disabled students is double that of non-disabled students.
The special needs students of Philadelphia are not always receiving the education they need to live the life they deserve. In many cases Philadelphia’s special needs students are undervalued, underestimated in their abilities, and denied the resources they should be granted. We envision every special needs student in Philadelphia having the resources they need to be successful in all areas of life. We are currently working on a program that will allow special needs students, their teachers, and parents, to have a better understanding of the resources available to them.
